Innovation Active The alt-protein funding winter The money meant to build the post-animal economy went from gold rush to drought: alternative-protein startups raised a record $5.1 billion in 2021, then less every year since, down to $881 million in 2025, the first sub-billion year since 2018. The winter is culling weak companies and repricing strong ones. This storyline tracks who still raises, who folds, and whether growing public funding, $2.5 billion in 2025, and leaner business models can carry the field to products that win on taste and price. Latest · Oct 14, 2026 Green Queen reported that Beyond Meat's Starmatter protein powder won a Clean Label Project Purity Award, placing in the top third of its category on independent contaminant testing. The outlet counted six consecutive quarters of revenue decline and a share price down more than 46% in the two months since a stock-support move. 55 beats The story so far Innovation Active The cultivated-meat approval path Whether meat grown from animal cells can reach American plates depends on a slow, company-by-company regulatory march: an FDA pre-market safety consultation, then a USDA grant of inspection. Each clearance is a precedent for the next, and every one is a test of whether the post-animal economy can actually scale past the press release. Latest · Oct 14, 2026 Vegconomist reported that EFSA wants to build in-house expertise on cultivated meat and precision fermentation before applications arrive, rather than react to each one. GFI Europe welcomed the move as a sign the agency is keeping pace with innovation and again urged the Commission to reverse its exclusion of novel foods from the Biotech Act's sandbox scheme. 17 beats The story so far Law & Policy Active Ontario's horse slaughter ban Ontario proposed banning horse, donkey and mule slaughter at its provincially licensed meat plants and barring those plants from processing horse meat arriving from federally licensed facilities elsewhere. The move follows Alberta's largest horse slaughterhouse closing, leaving only one operating in Canada, in Quebec, while Canada and the US together still send more than 10,000 horses a year to slaughter. The fight is whether Ontario adds a ban on transporting horses through the province bound for slaughter elsewhere. Latest · Oct 13, 2026 Animal Justice welcomed Ontario's proposal but said a major loophole remains: horses can still be sold and transported within and through the province to slaughter elsewhere, including to Canada's one remaining horse slaughterhouse in Quebec and to feedlots and export flights bound for Japan. The group said California, New Jersey and New York already outlaw the sale or transport of horses for slaughter. 2 beats Next: Oct 23, 2026 The story so far Activism & Animals Active Ontario's ban on dog and cat lab testing Ontario became the first jurisdiction in the world to ban invasive laboratory experiments on dogs and cats, a law taking legal effect January 1, 2027. The province is still allowing pound seizure, letting experimenters buy shelter dogs and cats for as little as $6 and $2. This storyline tracks whether Ontario closes the pound-seizure loophole and whether other jurisdictions follow with similar bans. Latest · Oct 9, 2026 Toronto drug-testing lab Nucro-Technics filed an application in Ontario Superior Court to overturn the province's ban on invasive dog and cat experiments, and its lawsuit indicates it will seek an injunction to stop the law taking effect on January 1, 2027. The company argues the ban intrudes on the federal criminal law power and conflicts with Health Canada drug-approval requirements, and Animal Justice said it will seek leave to intervene to defend the law. 3 beats Next: Jan 1, 2027 The story so far Law & Policy Active Ireland's Plant-Based Food Fund push The Vegan Society of Ireland is pressing the government to create a state-backed Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027, on the scale of Denmark's roughly 170 million euro program, to help farmers convert land to fruit and vegetable production. Ireland imports about 83% of the produce it eats and its commercial vegetable growers have fallen below 70, down from more than 600 in the 1990s, testing whether the state will back a shift from livestock to horticulture. Latest · Sep 28, 2026 The Vegan Society of Ireland asked the government to create a state-backed Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027, plus a published National Plant-Based Action Plan and dedicated grants for farmers entering horticulture, citing Ireland's 83% produce-import rate and a drop from more than 600 commercial vegetable growers in the 1990s to fewer than 70 today. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Active The plant-based labeling wars Can a plant-based burger be called a burger, and oat drink be called milk? Since the EU's top court reserved dairy words for animal products in 2017, meat and dairy lobbies have pushed naming bans through parliaments, agencies and statehouses on both sides of the Atlantic, and courts have thrown most of them out. As of July 2026, the EU deal restricting 31 animal-meat terms while sparing burger and sausage has cleared its final Parliament vote, 560 to 75, and waits only on the EU Council; in the US, Arkansas's ban fell in court and the FDA has blessed soy milk. Latest · Oct 8, 2026 Green Queen reported that a coalition of food companies and trade groups, including Beyond Meat, Quorn and Redefine Meat, urged MEPs to reject the extension of the EU's plant-based labelling ban. The rule barring "meat" and 31 related terms on meat-alternative packaging was published in the official register in August, giving companies three years to comply, and MEPs from the European People's Party, Patriots for Europe and the European Conservatives and Reformists signed amendments days later to widen it. The Federal Association for Alternative Protein Sources estimated the existing restrictions have caused €250 million in damage in Germany alone. 23 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Active NIH's retreat from animal testing NIH announced five new programs shifting funding toward animal-free research, including an $88 million investment in animal-free research infrastructure, after years of PETA pressure over experiments like Margaret Livingston's forced eyelid-suturing of infant monkeys, whose NIH funding was already cut. PETA is now pushing NIH to close its National Primate Research Centers and require institutions to publicly report animal use. This storyline tracks whether NIH follows through on primate center closures and sustained funding shifts. Latest · Oct 6, 2026 The National Cancer Institute, the largest NIH institute, published guidance in August requiring grant applicants to justify animal use in the public abstract of their applications, where the justification had previously sat in a section hidden from public view. The guidance also encourages cancer researchers to use human-based methods, and the Physicians Committee, which opposes animal experiments, praised it and said it wants the whole agency to follow. 2 beats The story so far Law & Policy Active Iowa's factory farms ahead of the ballot Sentient Media mapped all 10,830 factory farms operating in Iowa, finding they outnumber the state's gas stations five to one, ahead of Iowa's November 2026 election. The release makes the scale of industrial animal agriculture in the state visible as voters weigh candidates' positions on factory farm regulation. This storyline tracks whether the mapping shapes campaign debate or produces any regulatory response. Latest · Oct 3, 2026 NPR reported that a central Iowa family that raised about 8,000 hogs a year now grows lion's mane and other specialty mushrooms in half of a former hog barn, with help from Mercy For Animals' Transfarmation Project. The farm is set to receive $216,000 over four years to document the model for other farmers, and NPR cited an Environmental Working Group analysis counting 4,444 large Iowa CAFOs in 2025, up from 789 in 1990. 3 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Active The University of Minnesota primate lab collapse PETA pressure led the University of Minnesota to confirm that experimenter Geoff Ghose no longer works with nonhuman primates, after years of cranial-implant failures and missing safety records in his rhesus macaque lab. PETA says similar problems have surfaced in two other university primate labs. This storyline tracks whether the university acts on those labs and whether Ghose's program is formally shut down. Latest · Sep 30, 2026 Ron Perlman wrote to his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, in a letter PETA released, urging it to retire its surviving lab monkeys to sanctuaries. The letter noted that Geoff Ghose no longer experiments on monkeys. 3 beats The story so far Law & Policy Resolved California's non-UPF food seal California's legislature passed AB 2244 near-unanimously, creating a first-in-the-nation Non-Ultraprocessed Certified seal that food makers can voluntarily add to products meeting the state's new definition of ultra-processed, while the bill's criteria would disqualify many plant-based meats and dairy alternatives built on common additives. This storyline tracks whether Governor Newsom signs the bill, how its criteria affect plant-based products, and whether other states adopt similar certification. Latest · Sep 29, 2026 Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2244, creating the first state-backed Non-Ultraprocessed Certified seal in the US. Foods with dyes, flavor enhancers, non-sugar sweeteners or processing aids cannot qualify, which likely leaves many plant-based meats and dairy alternatives outside it. Non-UPF Verified, which runs its own certification, had urged a veto because the law leaves processing methods out of the criteria, FoodNavigator reported. 2 beats Next: Jun 1, 2029 The story so far Activism & Animals Active Marineland's beluga transfers Marineland, the shuttered Ontario roadside zoo, began shipping its remaining belugas to US aquariums after Canada approved emergency transfer for 28 of the whales, with their health status undisclosed. Three of five belugas Marineland exported to Mystic Aquarium in 2021 later died once the facility found pre-existing health conditions, and Animal Justice says Canadian law requires a public no-breeding guarantee that has not been confirmed for the whales now moving. Latest · Sep 26, 2026 Shedd Aquarium's preliminary necropsies of belugas Peekachu and Rain found foreign materials including large rocks and paint flecks in their stomachs along with evidence of underlying chronic health issues. Animal Justice said the findings confirm the whales were already suffering from years of neglect when Canada approved the emergency transfer this summer. 13 beats The story so far Law & Policy Active Smithfield Foods' worker safety crisis More than 100 workers walked off the job at Smithfield Foods' Monmouth, Illinois plant after a maintenance worker died, the plant's fourth worker death and first caused by a machine, following repeated OSHA citations in 2021, 2023 and 2025. The fight is whether OSHA or Smithfield impose real accountability for a pattern of fatal workplace hazards at a major meatpacking plant. Latest · Sep 25, 2026 More than 100 workers walked off the job at Smithfield Foods' Monmouth, Illinois plant after management ordered production to continue hours after maintenance worker Patou Mpinda, 44, died, the plant's fourth worker death and first caused by a machine. OSHA had already fined the plant $9,931.60 in February over amputation hazards, and the plant drew serious OSHA citations in 2021, 2023 and 2025. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Active The fight to end UK farrowing crates Animal Rising activist Michelle Farnham spent 21 days and nights inside a replica pig farrowing crate in London's Trafalgar Square to protest the cages that confine roughly 200,000 UK mother pigs a year across about 90% of indoor pig farms. The action opens a campaign pressing the UK government to commit to phasing out factory farming by 2040, with more farm investigations promised. The fight is whether sustained public pressure moves government policy on crate confinement and factory farming timelines. Latest · Sep 25, 2026 Animal Rising's Michelle Farnham walked out of a replica pig farrowing crate in Trafalgar Square after 21 consecutive days and nights inside it, emerging to about 100 supporters including former RSPCA president Chris Packham and Green Party MP Adrian Ramsay. The group is pressing the UK government to commit to phasing out factory farming by 2040 and has promised further farm investigations in the coming months. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Active The COMPACT Act fight Reps. Nick Langworthy and Mark Pocan introduced the bipartisan COMPACT Act to cut off all HHS funding, including every NIH grant, contract and fellowship, for experiments on dogs and cats. The bill would also require labs to rehome animals already in federally funded testing and add independent GAO compliance audits, testing whether Congress will end taxpayer funding for a practice PETA says relies on breeding docile beagles for labs. Latest · Sep 24, 2026 Reps. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) introduced the Companion Animal Protection Against Cruel Testing Act, which would end all HHS funding for experiments on dogs and cats, require labs to rehome animals currently in federally funded testing, and add GAO compliance audits every three years. PETA said an estimated 42,000 dogs and 12,000 cats are used annually in US labs, mostly beagles bred because they are docile. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Active The EU's food procurement rewrite The European Commission's proposed Public Procurement Act gives food its own article for the first time, letting public buyers weigh animal welfare, nutrition and supply-chain transparency when awarding roughly 50 billion euros a year in school, hospital and care-home food contracts. Advocates like ProVeg International say the text only grants permission, not an obligation, since sustainability criteria stay optional as the proposal heads into negotiation with the European Parliament and Council. Latest · Sep 23, 2026 More than 90 organizations, including Lidl, Ahold Delhaize, Nestle, Danone and Oatly, published a policy brief urging EU institutions to adopt a Food System Action Plan built on the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission findings. Public procurement was the only one of six proposed policy packages every stakeholder group agreed on, with the coalition proposing voluntary Planetary Health Diet criteria for school, hospital and prison food contracts. 2 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Active The fight to get H&M off wool PETA is pressuring COS and its parent H&M Group to drop wool entirely after an undercover investigation into a NATIVA-certified supplier found workers kicking and stomping sheep and dragging lambs by their legs. The campaign escalated when PETA supporters disrupted COS' New York Fashion Week runway show and a fashion executive assaulted a protester on camera. The fight tests whether welfare certifications can survive repeated documented abuse or whether major fashion brands abandon wool outright. Latest · Sep 19, 2026 PETA protesters disrupted H&M's London Fashion Week show over wool, continuing the campaign tied to its South African supplier investigation. 2 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Active The fight to end male chick culling Hatcheries worldwide kill an estimated 7 billion male chicks a year by maceration or gassing because they cannot lay eggs, but in-ovo sexing technology that identifies a chick's sex inside the egg before hatching is already commercial in the US and Brazil. Germany and France have banned routine chick culling and Italy's ban takes effect December 31, 2026, while the practice stays legal and widespread in the US. This storyline tracks whether US producers adopt the technology and whether more countries ban culling outright. Latest · Sep 19, 2026 Mercy For Animals said Norway adopted in-ovo sexing without regulatory pressure in 2023 and its Meat and Poultry Association now plans to phase out chick culling entirely by July 2027. A poll cited by the group found over 70% of surveyed US consumers say the egg industry should find an alternative to culling male chicks. 4 beats Next: Dec 31, 2026 The story so far Activism & Animals Active The mohair boycott campaign PETA investigations into South Africa's mohair industry, the world's top producer, filmed shearers lifting goats off the floor by the tail, sitting on struggling animals, and punching identification holes through their ears with pliers. The footage has driven a string of major brands to drop mohair one by one, testing whether pressure campaigns can end use of a lesser-known animal material the way they ended fur. Latest · Sep 18, 2026 Toy retailer FAO Schwarz banned mohair hours before a planned PETA protest outside its New York store, joining adidas, Columbia, Gap, UNIQLO and Zara among brands PETA says have dropped the material after its investigations into South African mohair farms. PETA says mohair farms kill Angora goats once they stop being profitable, years before their natural lifespan. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Active The Costco chicken supplier accountability fight Mercy For Animals filed a criminal complaint with Lee County, North Carolina authorities and the USDA after undercover footage showed workers beating chickens and burying live chicks at an organic farm supplying Costco. It is the second documented case of abuse Mercy For Animals has tied to Costco's chicken supply chain in five years, after a 2021 investigation and Costco's promised reforms. The fight is whether Costco enforces real accountability this time or the pattern repeats. Latest · Sep 16, 2026 Mercy For Animals filed a criminal complaint with Lee County, North Carolina law enforcement and the USDA after an undercover investigation documented workers beating chickens with sticks and burying live chicks under compost at an organic farm supplying Costco. It is the second time in five years the group has tied documented abuse to Costco's chicken supply chain, following a 2021 investigation and Costco's promised reforms. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Active England's school food overhaul England updated its national school food standards for the first time in more than a decade, making legumes like beans and lentils compulsory in weekly school meals, adding fortified pea milk and vegan yogurt as permitted options, and capping processed meat at once a week. The fight now is whether schools actually implement the tightened requirements as they phase in and whether the overhaul reshapes what British children eat. Latest · Sep 16, 2026 A six-week pilot of England's new school food standards at a Brighton primary school recorded a 15% drop in meal uptake, New Food reported. The consultation behind the standards drew 5,216 total responses, more than previously reported. 2 beats The story so far Law & Policy Dormant The country-of-origin beef labeling fight President Trump ordered a review of whether existing law allows mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef and moved to widen ranchers' ability to sell meat directly across state lines, citing a US cattle herd at a 75-year low and dependence on four dominant processors. The Meat Institute warns mandatory labeling would raise costs, while the Department of Justice separately expanded its meatpacker price-fixing probe. Latest · Sep 11, 2026 Trump issued a proclamation allowing 100,000 additional metric tons of imported beef into the US at lower tariffs for 90 days, a day after meeting a top shareholder in Brazilian meatpacker JBS, Sentient reported. 2 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant The fight to close animal-testing breeders Sustained activist pressure permanently closed Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin beagle-and-ferret breeder that supplied US labs, and campaigners are now turning to Marshall BioResources, a larger lab-animal supplier, with a 207-mile march to its gates. Four activists face felony charges carrying up to 31 years in prison over a March 15 rescue action at Ridglan, testing how far criminal prosecution can go in deterring direct pressure on the industry. Latest · Sep 11, 2026 PETA and We Animals released drone footage of Marshall BioResources' 103-acre compound in North Rose, New York, showing 50 warehouses confining roughly 16,000 beagles along with ferrets, cats and minipigs bred for lab sale. Whistleblowers said some beagles wear inhalation masks so the company can charge more for dogs trained to tolerate poison-gas testing, and PETA asked the USDA to revoke Marshall's dealer license. 2 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant The EU fur ban decision The European Commission's decision on the Fur Free Europe ban, triggered by a citizens' initiative that gathered over 1.5 million signatures, was expected in March 2026 and remains delayed. Undercover footage keeps surfacing showing fur farms breeding animals deformed for oversized pelts, testing whether public pressure forces the Commission to act. Latest · Sep 8, 2026 GAIA and Project 1882 released footage recorded on Finnish fox farms between November 2025 and April 2026 showing animals bred so oversized for their pelts that skin sags in folds, with untreated eye infections and injuries. Auction house Saga Furs sold more than 12,000 pelts exceeding the fur industry's own size cap at its March sale, despite a pledge made after similar images surfaced in 2017. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Dormant Ontario's ag-gag fight reaches the Supreme Court Animal Justice is asking the Supreme Court of Canada for leave to appeal Ontario's ag-gag law, which criminalizes entering a farm or slaughterhouse under false pretenses and which an Ontario court found partly unconstitutional before an appeals court reinstated it. It is the first such ag-gag challenge to reach Canada's top court, testing whether undercover investigation of factory farms keeps any constitutional protection in Canada. Latest · Sep 5, 2026 Animal Justice filed for leave to appeal Ontario's ag-gag law to the Supreme Court of Canada, arguing the law violates the Charter's guarantee of free expression. Ontario passed the law, the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act, in 2020; an Ontario court found key parts of it unconstitutional in 2024 before an appeals court reinstated them in 2026. Several US states have struck down similar statutes, but this is the first such challenge to reach a Canadian court's highest level. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant Sweden's fast-growth chicken fight Swedish broadcaster TV4 aired undercover Project 1882 footage of bloody, injured and dying chickens across farms run by the country's three major producers, days ahead of Sweden's general election. The footage pushed chicken welfare into the campaign, with four of the seven parliamentary parties now backing a ban on breeding chickens for fast growth, a practice Project 1882 says affects an estimated 95% of chickens raised across the EU. The fight is whether Sweden becomes the first country to ban fast-growth breeding and whether that pressures the practice EU-wide. Latest · Sep 3, 2026 TV4 aired undercover Project 1882 footage from seven farms run by Kronfagel, Guldfageln and Atria showing bloody, injured and dying chickens bred for fast growth, ahead of Sweden's general election. Three of Sweden's seven parliamentary parties already backed a breeding ban, and the Social Democrats spoke out against the practice after the broadcast aired, bringing support to four of seven parties. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Dormant The dietary guidelines lawsuit The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine sued HHS and USDA to withdraw the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, arguing a panel dominated by meat, dairy and low-carb industry ties rewrote them behind closed doors in three months, replacing roughly two years of independent scientific review. The fight is whether a court orders the guidelines withdrawn and what dietary guidance millions of Americans and federal food programs are left with in the meantime. Latest · Sep 3, 2026 PCRM's lawsuit noted it has challenged federal dietary guidelines on similar grounds four times before, winning in 2000. VegNews reported that 18% of more than 2,200 surveyed US adults said they had already changed their diet based on the new guidelines. 2 beats The story so far Law & Policy Dormant JBS's climate retreat JBS, the world's largest meatpacker, dropped its 2040 economy-wide net-zero and deforestation pledges in its latest sustainability review, replacing them with a narrower target covering only its own operations. The company excluded Scope 3 emissions, which make up 97% of its footprint, from the new goal. This storyline tracks whether investors, regulators or campaign groups push JBS back toward accountability for its full climate and deforestation record, and whether other major meatpackers follow its retreat. Latest · Sep 2, 2026 Pilgrim's Europe workers at a Northern Ireland meat plant that also makes vegan sausages escalated to an all-out strike over pay and unpaid morning breaks. 5 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant The Loess Hills hog waste pit fight A developer built a hog-waste storage pit next to a cemetery in Iowa's Loess Hills without telling the county, storing slaughterhouse waste trucked 50 miles from a Seaboard Triumph Foods plant that kills 110,000 hogs a week. The fight is whether county officials and regulators act on the undisclosed project and what accountability Seaboard Triumph Foods faces for waste tied to its plant. Latest · Aug 29, 2026 Sentient reported that developer Hawthorn Land Holdings built a hog-waste storage pit next to a cemetery in Iowa's Loess Hills without disclosing it to the county, storing slaughterhouse waste trucked 50 miles from Seaboard Triumph Foods' Sioux City plant, which slaughters 110,000 hogs a week. Developer Brian Gallup said the project avoided naming Seaboard because "we didn't want Seaboard mentioned," and nearby landowner Scott Koepsell said residents had no clear answers about what was being stored near them. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Dormant The global foie gras ban push Brazil became the first country to ban both foie gras production and sales nationwide, cutting off imports built on force-feeding ducks and geese, while the UK's Labour government has yet to decide whether to keep its manifesto pledge banning foie gras imports amid EU pressure. This storyline tracks which countries follow with sales bans versus production-only bans, and whether the UK follows through. Latest · Aug 25, 2026 Mercy For Animals said 17,000 additional emails urged Lula to sign the foie gras ban once it reached his desk, on top of the more than 1 million messages sent during the bill's passage. Force-feeding grows a duck or goose's liver to 10 times its normal size to produce foie gras. 4 beats The story so far Innovation Dormant The Every Company's egg protein scale-up The Every Company is manufacturing its animal-free egg white protein, OvoPro, at commercial scale at an ADM plant in Clinton, Iowa, the first US site running precision fermentation at this volume and only the company's second commercial-scale facility after Bulgaria. The Every Company says OvoPro will be priced at or below battery-caged egg costs, a claim not yet independently audited. This storyline tracks whether the Iowa plant hits scale and whether the cost claim holds up. Latest · Aug 24, 2026 ADM won $2.23 million in Iowa state tax credits toward a $55.5 million conversion of part of its Clinton plant into a precision-fermentation hub to help scale Every Co.'s OvoPro egg protein, a project expected to create 53 jobs. 2 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant OHSU's primate research phase-out Oregon Health & Science University's board voted to begin winding down primate breeding and experiments at its Oregon National Primate Research Center in Beaverton, after years of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine campaigning and roughly 25,000 Oregonians writing state officials to demand it. PCRM is now pushing OHSU to set hard milestones for finishing the phase-out. The fight tests whether a major primate research center actually closes its animal program or lets the resolution stall without a timeline. Latest · Aug 21, 2026 Oregon Health & Science University's board voted to start winding down primate breeding and experiments at its research center in Beaverton, after PCRM campaigned for years and roughly 25,000 Oregonians wrote their governor and state lawmakers demanding it. PCRM's Mikalah Singer called the resolution a significant step in the right direction and is now pushing OHSU to set hard milestones for finishing the phase-out. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Dormant The Gag Big Ag campaign Hackney's mayor pledged what Adfree Cities calls a UK-first ban on meat and dairy advertisements on council-owned land, joining the group's nationwide Gag Big Ag campaign against factory-farming ads. The fight tests whether local ad bans can pressure meat and fast-food brands, which spent over £110 million on UK outdoor advertising in 2024 alone, and whether other UK councils follow Hackney's lead. Latest · Aug 18, 2026 Hackney's mayor pledged what Adfree Cities called a UK-first ban on meat and dairy advertisements on council-owned land, backing the group's nationwide Gag Big Ag campaign; McDonald's and KFC spent more than £110 million on UK outdoor advertising in 2024 alone. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant NYC's carriage horse ban fight New York City's Council is weighing Intro 943, a bill to phase out horse-drawn carriages, after 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan died in a June crash involving a carriage horse. The bill, renamed Romanch's Law, would end the roughly 150-year-old industry by June 2028 and has drawn its first-ever sitting Council Speaker endorsement, reviving a fight past bills repeatedly lost. This storyline tracks whether retailers lock in binding commitments before the deadline or let the pledge lapse. Latest · Aug 17, 2026 A DUH-commissioned study found Germany's largest supermarket chains, Lidl, Kaufland, REWE and EDEKA, are stalling on their pledge to phase out the lowest animal-welfare meat categories by 2030, with only a third of the ten largest German slaughterhouses approached agreeing to participate and the contractual foundations for the pledge still lacking. Aldi said roughly a third of its private-label sales already come from higher-welfare housing categories 3 through 5. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant Yucca Valley's rodeo gear fight An activist filed a proposed ordinance in Yucca Valley, California banning rodeo gear including spurs, flank straps, ropes and prods, reviving a dormant local rodeo fight. A pro-rodeo nonprofit is organizing a Memorial Day weekend 2027 rodeo there, and the town council has not yet scheduled a vote, testing whether the roughly 22,000-resident desert town lets rodeo return. Latest · Aug 16, 2026 A Yucca Valley activist filed a proposed ordinance banning rodeo gear like spurs, flank straps, ropes and prods, setting up a fight with a pro-rodeo nonprofit organizing a Memorial Day weekend 2027 rodeo. 1 beat The story so far Law & Policy Dormant The PRIMATE Act Lawmakers introduced the bipartisan PRIMATE Act to ban US imports of monkeys used in laboratory testing, as nearly 285,000 monkeys entered the US for research between 2015 and 2025, nearly all bound for labs, and wild long-tailed macaque populations face a projected steep decline. The fight is whether the bill advances through a Congress that has rarely restricted animal research imports. Latest · Aug 14, 2026 Lawmakers introduced the bipartisan PRIMATE Act to ban US imports of monkeys for lab testing. Nearly 285,000 monkeys were imported into the US for research between 2015 and 2025, nearly all sent to laboratories, and the IUCN projects a 50% decline in long-tailed macaque populations over the next three generations if current trends continue. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant The octopus farming ban push Spain's Nueva Pescanova scrapped its plan for the world's first commercial octopus farm after a global backlash, sparing octopuses bound for barren tanks and an estimated 2.1 billion wild-caught fish a year that would have fed them. Campaign groups now want the win locked in permanently across Europe before another company tries the same thing. This storyline tracks whether an EU-wide ban on octopus farming follows, and whether any company attempts a similar commercial octopus farm elsewhere. Latest · Aug 13, 2026 Sentient reported Nueva Pescanova had invested $63 million in its planned Gran Canaria octopus farm before scrapping it, a project campaigners said would have confined an estimated 1 million octopuses a year and required roughly 3 pounds of mostly wild-caught fish feed for every pound of octopus produced. 3 beats The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant Quebec's livestock auction abuse accountability fight Animal Justice video showed workers at a Quebec livestock auction beating calves and sheep, some just days old, with rods and canes, and the group said MAPAQ inspectors documented the same abuse a year earlier without acting. The fight is whether Quebec creates independent oversight, the National Framework for Farmed Animal Protection Animal Justice is demanding, or lets the conflict of interest between MAPAQ's dual roles promoting and policing agriculture continue. Latest · Aug 12, 2026 Animal Justice released video showing workers at a Quebec livestock auction beating calves and sheep, some just days old, with rods and canes; the group said MAPAQ inspectors had documented the same abuse a year earlier and took no action in between. 1 beat The story so far Activism & Animals Dormant Quebec's fur farm accountability fight Animal Justice is asking Quebec Superior Court to compel the province to enforce its own animal welfare law against fur farms, presenting internal MAPAQ documents showing officials have known since 2022 that conditions on fox and mink farms likely violate provincial law and that an internal report recommends a ban. Quebec has never brought its fur farm permit requirement into force and is now moving to dismiss rather than defend the record. A ruling allowing the case to proceed would force the province to defend years of documented inaction against its own officials' conclusions. Kennedy Jr. has called ultra-processed foods poison, but the FDA told industry it won't ban them and is struggling to even define the category, even as ultra-processed foods make up 55% of Americans' calories and 67% of children's. The fight is whether the administration moves beyond rhetoric toward an actual regulatory definition and rule. Latest · Aug 11, 2026 The FDA proposed a rule ending the self-affirmed GRAS pathway that let companies clear new food ingredients without notifying the agency, while delaying a formal ultra-processed food definition. The fight is whether the EU will extend binding targets to human-consumption protein, which Systemiq projects as a €111 billion economic opportunity, or whether Brussels confines its protein ambition to feed security while competitors like China set 55% alt-protein consumption targets for 2050. Latest · Jul 9, 2026 The European Vegetarian Union published a response calling the voluntary food-side measures insufficient, with EVU policy manager Rafael Pinto arguing the binding 35% feed-protein target could be met simply by increasing human consumption of plant proteins since current import dependency is caused by imbalanced diets, and renewing the EVU's call for a standalone EU plant-based action plan [117]. GFI Europe cited Denmark's EUR 68 million protein-crop farmer bonus as the kind of concrete funding mechanism absent from the EU plan [117]. 2 beats The story so far Law & Policy Dormant Denmark's factory farm reform pledge Denmark's governing coalition pledged to end ultra-intensive factory farming after animal welfare became the defining issue of the spring 2026 national election.
