What beekeepers actually take, and give back
Honey is a bee colony’s winter food, made by foraging workers who reduce nectar’s water content and pack it into wax cells for the months when nothing is blooming. A colony needs roughly 60 lbs of stores to get through winter, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Commercial beekeepers harvest that surplus and, routinely, replace some or all of it with a substitute: sucrose syrup, high fructose corn syrup, or a dry sugar board. That substitution is standard across most commercial honey operations, because the honey itself is the product being sold.
The substitute keeps bees alive but it is not the same food. Honey carries trace enzymes, amino acids and micronutrients that plain sugar syrup does not. A 2023 study in the journal Animals compared sucrose syrup against invert sugar syrup as winter feed and found no significant difference in winter mortality or spring brood buildup between the two, though it did not test honey itself as a comparison feed. The exploitation argument, not a health argument, is the one that carries weight in vegan ethics: the colony made honey for itself, and a beekeeper took it and substituted a cheaper input.
The scale of what a single bee contributes makes the swap easier to picture. A worker bee produces roughly a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey across its entire working life, according to the Vegan Society. A jar on a shelf represents the pooled output of thousands of individual foragers, harvested from a store the colony built to survive months when there is nothing left to forage. That is the baseline vegans object to before any of the other management practices below even enter the picture.
Queens, clipped wings, and requeening
A honeybee colony swarms when it outgrows its hive, with the old queen leading roughly half the workers off to found a new colony elsewhere. That is normal reproduction for a superorganism, and it costs a commercial beekeeper a hive’s worth of workforce and, often, that season’s honey crop. The routine countermeasure is clipping a small section off one of the queen’s wings, enough that she cannot fly and lead a swarm away. It does not stop swarming outright, but it buys the beekeeper time to intervene. Some beekeepers clip a queen’s wings for this reason, alternating which wing is cut in even and odd years so her age can be read at a glance, though the practice is far from universal even in commercial operations, where many keepers rely on paint marking instead.
Queens are also routinely replaced, a practice called requeening, sometimes annually, to keep a colony’s temperament and productivity predictable and to head off the urge to swarm in the first place. Neither wing clipping nor requeening involves the visible violence people sometimes imagine when they picture animal agriculture. That is precisely the vegan argument against it: the objection is to treating a colony as a managed input to be reshaped for yield, not to any single dramatic act.
Commercial operations also queue up replacement queens on a schedule, buying mated queens by mail or from dedicated queen breeders instead of letting a colony rear and select its own. Breeding for calm temperament, disease resistance and honey yield across generations has narrowed the genetic pool in managed stock compared to feral populations, which several apiculture researchers have linked to greater vulnerability to disease outbreaks and to the scale of the die-offs commercial operations now report most winters.
Smoke and routine hive disruption
Opening a hive for inspection, harvest, or treatment means smoking the bees first. Smoke masks the alarm pheromone bees release to rally defenders and appears to trigger a feeding instinct that calms them, a response beekeepers have relied on for millennia. It is a low-harm technique compared to the alternative of an unprotected hive inspection, and few critics of honey argue smoking itself is the problem. What it illustrates is the more mundane point behind the whole guide: a managed colony is opened, inspected, medicated for mites and disease, fed, and moved on a schedule set by the keeper, not the bees. None of that is cruelty in the way a slaughterhouse is. It is management of an animal for a product, which is the definition vegans apply.
The bigger argument is pollination, not the jar
Most people who ask whether honey is vegan are picturing a jar on a shelf. The practice with the largest actual footprint on US honeybees has nothing to do with honey at all. Each February, California’s almond orchards bloom on a tight three to four week window, and nearly every managed colony in the country that can travel gets trucked there to pollinate them. USDA NASS data compiled by University of Illinois’s farmdoc daily put demand at an estimated 2.7 million colonies for the 2024 bloom and 2.8 million for 2025, a 3.5% year over year rise. By January 1 each year, 37% of all US honey bee colonies are already staged in California ahead of the bloom, and farmdoc’s analysis found that February 2024 demand required the equivalent of 99% of the colonies counted in the country on January 1 of that year.

Those losses are not proven to be caused by almond pollination alone. Beekeepers and researchers point to a mix of Varroa mite loads, viral spread, pesticide exposure and nutritional stress from long truck hauls and monoculture bloom windows, and the losses showed up nationwide, in orchard states and well beyond them. But the timing is not incidental: commercial beekeepers reported the 2024 to 2025 season’s die-offs in January 2025, just as they prepared to load hives onto trucks for the bloom that pays a large share of many operations’ annual income. A colony that dies in January cannot pollinate anything in February, and a beekeeper who loses 62% of a fleet has to rebuild it by splitting survivors and buying replacement queens, which is its own high-turnover cycle.
The economics compound the pressure. Growers pay per colony for the bloom, and USDA’s Cost of Pollination report put the average price across two major almond growing regions at $209 per colony for the 2025 bloom, up 15% from $181 in 2024, a rise both growers and beekeepers attribute to tighter supply after the die-offs. A beekeeper who loses most of a fleet before February still has pollination contracts to fill, which pushes rebuilding, splitting and requeening into an even faster cycle than usual, right as demand for replacement colonies is at its highest.
The other side: livestock, not wildlife
The strongest counterargument to the vegan case on honey does not defend the sugar syrup swap. It reframes the whole debate: Apis mellifera, the western honeybee, is a domesticated, managed livestock species, not a wild animal in need of rescue. It was moved around the globe by humans for millennia before anyone worried about pollinator decline, and colony numbers are set by beekeeping economics, not conservation need. Several field studies, including a 2023 Journal of Animal Ecology paper on two California landscapes, found direct evidence that dense managed honeybee populations reduce nectar and pollen available to native bees nearby, and a broader research synthesis has found consistent overlap in floral resource use between honeybees and wild bees, with more contested evidence on how often that overlap actually harms wild bee populations.
That gives the popular save the bees message an odd target. Managed honeybee colonies in the US are not declining toward extinction. Beekeepers replace lost colonies every year by splitting survivors and buying queens, which is why the industry can absorb 40 to 60% annual losses and still field millions of hives every February. The bees actually at risk of disappearing are the roughly 4,000 native North American species, many of them solitary and unmanaged, that a backyard planting of native flowers helps more than a jar of local honey does.
None of this makes keeping bees wrong on its own terms, and it does not put honey in the same category as, say, factory farmed pork. A hobbyist with two backyard hives is managing an insect colony, not confining a sentient mammal in a cage. Vegans who avoid honey generally are not arguing that beekeeping is uniquely cruel among animal industries. They are arguing that once you accept the definition of veganism as avoiding animal exploitation broadly, a product taken from a managed colony and replaced with cheaper feed falls inside that definition, whatever the honeybee’s status as a domesticated species implies about its welfare.
Why the Vegan Society draws the line here
The Vegan Society’s founding definition excludes, so far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Honey production does not need to be cruel to fail that test. It only needs to take something a colony made for its own survival and sell it, which is what harvesting and resale is by definition. The Society also flags the specific management practices covered above, wing clipping and routine requeening among them, as evidence that a managed colony is treated as an input to be optimized. For most vegans that is enough to place honey closer to dairy and eggs on the spectrum than to, say, wild-caught fish, because the underlying relationship, an animal managed for a product taken from it, has the same shape, whatever gap exists between a bee’s capacity to suffer and a cow’s or a hen’s.
