That genetic condition, molybdenum cofactor deficiency, is present from birth and is usually fatal within days regardless of diet. Outside of it, exactly one acquired case has ever made it into the medical literature.

A single reported incident of acquired molybdenum deficiency occurred in 1981 in a patient receiving total parenteral nutrition that was devoid of molybdenum
